Getting Started

Welcome to photography — one of the most rewarding hobbies you can start.

At Ribble Valley Photographic Society, we believe photography should be enjoyable, creative, and accessible to everyone. You do not need expensive equipment or years of experience to begin taking great photographs.

Whether you use a mobile phone, compact camera, DSLR, mirrorless camera, or drone, this page will help you start your photography journey with confidence.

Start with What You Have

The best camera is the one you already own.

Many amazing photographs are taken using:

  • Mobile phones
  • Entry-level cameras
  • Older DSLR cameras
  • Compact travel cameras

Do not wait until you have “better gear” before starting.

The most important thing is learning:

  • Light
  • Composition
  • Timing
  • Observation
  • Creativity

Learn the Basics

You do not need to master everything immediately. Start with these core areas:

1. Composition

Composition is how you arrange things in your photograph.

Simple tips:

  • Keep backgrounds clean
  • Avoid distractions
  • Try different angles
  • Use leading lines
  • Place subjects off-centre
  • Fill the frame

2. Light

Photography literally means “drawing with light.”

Good light makes a huge difference.

Great times to shoot:

  • Early morning
  • Late evening
  • Golden hour
  • Overcast days for softer portraits

Try observing:

  • Shadows
  • Reflections
  • Sun direction
  • Indoor window light

3. Focus

Make sure your main subject is sharp.

Practice:

  • Tapping focus on phones
  • Single-point autofocus
  • Eye focus for portraits
  • Using autofocus tracking for moving subjects

4. Camera Settings

As you grow, begin learning:

  • Aperture (f-stop)
  • Shutter speed
  • ISO

These control:

  • Brightness
  • Motion blur
  • Depth of field

Do not worry if these sound confusing now — everyone starts there.

What Should I Photograph?

Photograph anything that interests you.

Popular beginner subjects include:

  • Nature
  • Flowers
  • Pets
  • Landscapes
  • Sunsets
  • Wildlife
  • Street photography
  • Family moments
  • Architecture
  • Macro details
  • Local walks
  • Travel

The more you photograph, the more you improve.

Practice is Everything

Photography improves through repetition.

Try:

  • Taking your camera everywhere
  • Photographing regularly
  • Revisiting locations
  • Trying different weather conditions
  • Comparing your progress over time

Do not delete every imperfect image — mistakes teach you.

Editing is Part of Photography

Most photographers edit their images.

Beginner-friendly editing apps:

  • Snapseed
  • Lightroom Mobile
  • Photoshop Express
  • Apple Photos
  • Google Photos

Simple edits can improve:

  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Colour
  • Cropping
  • Sharpness

Editing should enhance your image — not rescue every photograph.

You Do Not Need Expensive Gear

Many beginners think better equipment automatically creates better photos.

In reality:

  • Knowledge matters more
  • Practice matters more
  • Light matters more
  • Creativity matters more

Upgrade equipment slowly as you learn what you enjoy photographing.
